Why Your AC Freezes Up in Georgia Summer
Finding ice on your air conditioner during a Georgia summer seems impossible โ but it is one of the most common problems we see across Gwinnett County. Here is why it happens and what to do.
What Causes AC Freeze-Up
The most common culprit is restricted airflow from a dirty filter. When air cannot move freely across the evaporator coil, coil temperature drops below freezing and Georgia's humidity gives plenty of moisture to solidify. Low refrigerant and a failing blower motor are also common causes.
Warning Signs to Watch
Reduced airflow from vents, warm air despite the system running, ice on the refrigerant lines, hissing or gurgling sounds, and water pooling around the indoor unit as ice melts.
Immediate Steps
Turn the system to Fan Only mode โ this melts ice without flooding the drain pan. Replace a dirty filter immediately. Allow 2 to 4 hours to thaw before restarting in cooling mode. If it freezes again, call a technician.
When to Call a Pro
If the system refreezes after a filter change, you likely have a refrigerant leak or mechanical problem. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification โ not a DIY repair.
